Directions to Student: While most teachers are happy/willing to write Letters of Recommendation for students, there are a few things that students should keep in mind when choosing a teacher to write a Letter of Recommendation: 1. Are you giving the teacher an adequate amount of time to write this letter? 2. Are you sure that this is the best teacher to write this letter for you? Teachers need to be truthful in the letters they write for students. If a teacher writes a high quality letter for a candidate which is not deserving, then that may affect the credibility of that teacher with the university / organization for future students, and other students applying for the same thing as you. 3. Are you sure that this teacher is qualified to write a quality letter on your behalf? Consider how long the teacher has known you. If you ask a teacher you had Freshmen year and that you have not spoken with since -- then it is difficult for that teacher to write about you in an effective narrative fashion. Letter of Recommendations which are simply laundry lists of accomplishments simply are not very intriguing. Have you known the teacher for less than 1 semester? Many universities / organizations will be looking to see distinguishing characteristics about you and ask the teacher to compare you to your peers. A teacher who has known you for less than 1 semester (only 1 YEAR even) is not always able to do this. 4. Are you aware that along with most Letters of Recommendation, teachers will also have to fill out a brief set of questions regarding how long you have known one another? "2 School Years" looks a lot better than "2 months." 5. You should provide the teachers you ask for Letters of Recommendation with an appropriately stamped envelope addressed to the University/College or organization.
