Summer 2009 Assignments for HONORS Courses

Why Summer Assignments?? As with other academic departments at Rancho Buena Vista, we, in Social Studies, recognize the value of maintaining "academic fitness." Part of that fitness is the recognition that the high expectations of our Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Programs can be quite draining within the context of the regular academic year and that, with the additional work required of these external testing agencies, the workload associated with them can be quite strenuous. Rather than lump this burden upon students at inopportune times, we have elected to spread out assignments in such a way as to diminish the "crush" of these expectations. Over the years, this strategy has been well-received and much appreciated when students move into the routines and stresses within the performing arts, athletics, or other co-curricular academic pursuits. There are key elements of the curriculum that can be accomplished by self-directed and self-motivated students such as those within our Honors Program. This summer assignment requires the reading of excerpts of the assigned text for the class.
AP World History Summer Assignment Readings
If you are unable to access either the AP World History Summer Assignment Readings or the accompanying Questions (see links above), excerpts have already been reproduced and distributed through the RBV Counselors to Middle School students who have enrolled in the class. Additional copies will be available in the RBV Counseling Office, the Administration Building, and in the Library Textbook Room.
